Sometimes referred to as filter fabrics, the original intentions for the material was to be used as a substitute for granular soil filters.
Originally being used in the 1950s to tackle erosion control situations such as under or behind precast concrete blocks where there was a need for both sufficient soil retention and permeability as well as ample fabric strength, this then established the path for the use of geotextiles in filtration.
Geotextile products can be applied to numerous engineering tasks including railroads, airfields, roads, retaining structures, canals, bank protection, reservoirs, coastal engineering and dams.
When used in this way it will be positioned at the tension surface to give the soil more strength, this is overall a cheaper way of improving soil strength than other more conventional ways.
In the last 30 years the geotextile material has become the more frequently used material for soil filtration with cheaper production, easer installation and the ability to have more accurate properties applied to them with specific factory machining, increasing performance across the board.
